December 3, 2002 — Wayne M. Samuelson, M.D., has been named associate dean for admissions at the University of Utah School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2003. Samuelson, associate professor of internal medicine, will oversee all aspects of the admissions process for accepting new medical students. Currently the medical school admits 100 students each year. It received more than 1,100 applications for classes beginning in the fall of 2002.

Samuelson will work with Victoria E. Judd, M.D., professor of pediatrics and associate dean of admissions, in directing the process for the class that enters in the fall of 2003.

“Dr. Samuelson was selected from a group of distinguished and well-qualified candidates,” said David J. Bjorkman, M.D., senior associate dean of the medical school. “He is highly esteemed by fellow school of medicine faculty and is recognized as an excellent teacher by medical students.”

Overseeing the school’s admissions process is a demanding responsibility, and many dedicated people at all levels throughout the school are involved, Samuelson said. “My goal is to continue to make the process fair and accessible for the many well-qualified students who apply,” he added.

Samuelson, who joined the school of medicine in 1995, received his undergraduate and medical degrees at the U, after which he completed a residency and fellowship at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. He was a faculty member at Duke for 10 years, where he participated on the medical school’s admissions committee.
