November 19, 2002 — This week students at the University of Utah are learning about study abroad opportunities, viewing international films and sampling cuisine from other cultures. These and other activities are part of the University’s participation in International Education Week, Nov. 18-22, sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Education and State and dedicated to teaching young people around the world about science, health, languages, education, business and government.

Michael Allcott, associate director of the University’s International Center, said in addition to promoting opportunities for students to study outside the United States, the purpose of the University’s activities is to “highlight the significance of international students on our campus and international matters in our curriculum.”

Allcott hopes that the events of the week will, as President Bush said in a prepared statement last Friday, promote “greater understanding among students from different nations.

“When students study abroad or host foreign students, they gain greater respect for the principles and aspirations of others around the world, as well as for the differences among countries and cultures. They also realize that many values are common and shared around the world,” Bush said.

As part of International Education Week, a by-invitation-only Iftar (or breaking of the fast) will be held as the Muslim Students Association (MSA) presents its first annual “A Taste of Ramadan” dinner. The evening will also include a short presentation about Ramadan. Muslim University students and campus friends will participate in the event.

The International Center, the Union Programming Council and the International Student Council are sponsoring International Education Week activities at the University.

Following is a schedule of University International Education Week events:

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 6 p.m.: The film The Wings of Desire, part of the International Evening Film Series, will be shown in the Union Theatre, with free popcorn available for everyone.

Wednesday, Nov. 20: From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Europe Day Open Haus in the International Center, Room 159 Olpin Union Building. Participants can enjoy free food, watch the film Il Postino at 12 noon, learn about study in Europe and enter drawings to win free prizes.

At 12 noon, students may also attend an information session titled “Imagining Contemporary London,” in room 3850 of the Languages and Communication Building. At 6 p.m., the films Cecilia, Ponette and Abre Los Ojos will be shown in the Union Theatre.

Thursday, Nov. 21: The film Shall We Dance will be shown at 12 noon in the Union Theatre, with free popcorn for everyone. Students can learn more about studying theatre, the fine arts and humanities in London by attending an information session, to be held in the Marriott Library’s Gould Auditorium.

Saturday, Nov. 23, at 6 p.m.: The films Company and Wild Strawberries will be shown in the Union Theatre.

Sunday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m.: Baran and Life is Sweet will be shown in the Union Theatre.
