March 12, 2012 – Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) President Cynthia Bioteau will offer the keynote address at the 2012 University of Utah Women’s Week celebration. This year’s theme, “Powerful Beyond Measure: Women, Work, and Education” will honor the achievements women have made professionally and the importance of education in those achievements. Bioteau will speak on Wednesday, March 21 at noon in the Olpin Student Union Ballroom. All Women’s Week events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
“This is an important time in the relationship between the university and Salt Lake Community College,” said Octavio Villalpando, associate vice president for Equity and Diversity at the University of Utah. “We recently created a partnership to provide a seamless transfer process between the two institutions. The initiative will focus on increasing access for students of color to the university, support student retention and help ensure that transfer students successfully graduate.”
Bioteau is the 7th president and the first woman CEO to lead the SLCC. She has worked for over 35 years in the fields of education, mental health and business, and has brought that experience together to provide what is described as her “passion for accessible and critical education for all community members.”
“We’re delighted that president Bioteau will give the Women’s Week keynote address,” said Jennifer Williams Molock, assistant vice president for Student Equity and Diversity at the University of Utah and the Women’s Week committee chair. “Salt Lake Community College is an invaluable partner for the University of Utah, especially around our mutual goals of enhancing the gender and racial diversity of our student population. President Bioteau’s accomplishments fit perfectly with this year’s theme of ‘Powerful Beyond Measure: Women, Work, and Education.’”
A one-day conference, “Women: Powerful Beyond Measure,” has been added to the Women’s Week agenda. It will open with an address by Jill B. Jones, whose research focuses on gender issues related to work, health care and the global economy. She is the co-author of “Casino Women: Courage in Unexpected Places,” a pioneering look at the female face of corporate gaming. The full list of Women’s Week events includes:

Each year during Women’s Week, the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women and the Office for Equity and Diversity present The Linda K. Amos Award for Distinguished Service to Women in recognition of a University of Utah female staff or faculty member who has selflessly given time and energy to improve the educational and/or working environment for women at the university. The commission has selected Dr. Carrie Byington, as the 2012 recipient. Byington is vice chair of the University of Utah, department of Pediatrics, the Edna Benning Presidential Professor of Pediatrics, and associate director of the University of Utah Center for Clinical and Translational Science.
Byington is a highly respected clinician in General Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases, and a successful independent investigator who is known nationally for her pioneering work in understanding the viral mechanisms of fever in young infants.
