Experienced Entrepreneur, Educator to Lead University of Utah Technology Commercialization Office

Following an exhaustive national search, the University of Utah (the U) selected Bryan Ritchie to be the next director of its Technology Commercialization Office (TCO). Ritchie joins the U from James Madison College, a residential college that is part of Michigan State University, where he served as a professor of political economy with a focus on international relations, director of the Michigan State Entrepreneur Network, and co-director of the Michigan Center for Innovation and Economic Prosperity. Ritchie’s first day on the job will be Sept. 14.

Enrollment Expert Mary Parker to Head University of Utah’s New Enrollment Unit

Mary G. Parker, an accomplished leader in university student recruitment and retention, will join the University of Utah (the U) as associate vice president for enrollment management, effective September 12. Parker fills a senior administration role and will be responsible for designing and carrying out the U’s first integrated strategic enrollment plan.

Eccles Health Sciences Library Awarded $13.2 Million

The University of Utah Spencer S Eccles Health Sciences Library has received two contracts worth $13.2 million from the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The first $3.7 million contract will make the library home to the country’s only NLM Training Center for the next five years. The second award, worth $9.5 million, renews the library’s five-year contract with the NLM to serve as the country’s MidContinental Regional Medical Library (MCRML).

New Spafford Chairs to Focus on Aging

The University of Utah College of Social Work has selected the next two Belle S Spafford Endowed Chairs in Social Work. Marilyn Luptak and Fran Wilby will serve consecutive 18-month terms during the colleagues’ three-year, joint research project. The Belle S. Spafford Endowed Chair in Social Work is a prestigious position dedicated to improving the lives of Utah’s women and their families. The Spafford Chair is the only academic position with such a purpose in a school of social work in the country.
