Ute Fans Participate in “Bleed Red For The Community” Prior to Season Opener

The University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business is proud to welcome Olivia R. Liu Sheng to its Information Systems department. Sheng is a respected expert in the field of Management of Information Systems, and her research interests include knowledge management, personalization and security technology for healthcare applications and business applications. Sheng has worked in developing systems for cancer informatics that have been used for data management and in clinical studies, including studies that evaluate various hypotheses like the impact of genetics or environment on the propensity to develop cancer.

(Congress appropriated $4.4 billion for 2002, up from the $2.1 billion in 1990.) U of U Names New Director of Honors Program

Martha S. Bradley, associate professor of architecture in the University of Utah’s Graduate School of Architecture, has been named director of the University’s Honors Program. She succeeds Richard D. Rieke, who has served as the program’s director since 1995. Bradley will assume the position on Aug. 1 and will continue to teach part-time.

AAMC Selects David Bjorkman for Fellowship Program

David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., senior associate dean of the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been selected to participate in a new national leadership development program for current and future medical school deans. Bjorkman is one of three individuals selected from among 16 applicants for the 2002-2003 Council of Deans Fellowship Program, sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Wood named Interim Director of BEBR

James Wood, Senior Economist at the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR), will serve as the Interim Director of the office at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. Wood was appointed to this position this week, following the death of R. Thayne Robson, long-time Director of BEBR in May. Wood will serve as Interim Director throughout a nationwide search, set to begin in September. He estimates the search may take up to a year. Following the appointment of a new Director, Wood will serve as Associate Director of BEBR.

Finance Professor Appointed to Energy Pricing Investigation Team

Recent assertions of the possibility of price manipulation in California and the West by Enron or other energy providers/brokers has prompted the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to conduct a fact-finding investigation. Dr. Hendrik Bessembinder, Blaine Huntsman Professor of Finance at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, will serve on the investigating committee, along with two other academics, two energy analyst consultants, and members of the FERC staff.
