Research Indicates Free Rooms Not An Incentive For Hotel Patrons

In a May 23 Wall Street Journal article called “Desperate to Fill Their Beds, Hotels Offer Free Rooms,” Ron Lieber reports that three of the largest hotel chains in United States are giving away free rooms in an attempt to entice business users back to their hotels after a fall-off in travel following September 11. Rohit Verma, Associate Professor of Operations Management at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah says such incentives won’t be effective.

U of U Honor Student Named One of Five National 2002 Swearer Humanitarian Award Recipients

Several weeks ago Ashley DiAna was named one of nine University of Utah Bennion Center Service-Learning Scholars. Last Friday the 23-year-old political science student marched in the University of Utah’s commencement exercises. Later that day DiAna, a University Honor’s Program graduate, learned she has been selected as one of five students to receive the prestigious 2002 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award. The honor is given by Campus Compact, a national coalition of college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education.

Beloved and respected business researcher and professor R. Thayne Robson died this morning, May 13. Robson’s long and distinguished tenure as the Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Utah dates back to the early 1970’s. Yesterday the University of Utah’s Marriott Library and Youth Teaching Youth Program, administered through the Museum of Natural History, were presented with the University’s 2002 Diversity Awards. Karen L. Dace, associate vice president for diversity, presented an unexpected Diversity Award to Kathryn Felker, director of Educational Opportunity Programs for the University of Utah.

Dead Man Walking Author to Speak at U of U

The Bennion Center at the University of Utah is sponsoring “Dead Man Walking-The Journey Continues,” a lecture by best-selling author Sister Helen Prejean. The presentation is Thursday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m., in room 134 of the University’s Graduate School of Social Work, 395 South 1500 East. Student tickets are $4. General admission tickets are $5.
