University of Utah Library Brings the Arctic to the Desktop

American conservation took a major step forward 50 years ago-the establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska. The Refuge has preserved a unique piece of American wilderness and wildlife for future generations. The 50th anniversary of the establishment of ANWR will be officially recognized on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010.Fortunately the natural sounds of this remote landscape have been preserved for future generations and can now be accessed by anyone with a computer and access to the Internet. Anyone interested in the sounds of ANWR can find them at the digital Western Soundscape Archive, which resides at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah and can be accessed at www.westernsoundscape.org

Nov.10, 2010-A recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that Americans list lack of money, the pressures of gift giving, lack of time and credit card debt as top causes of holiday stress. One in five Americans are worried that holiday stress could affect their physical health and 36 percent say they either eat or drink alcohol to cope with holiday stress.

Pride 2010 Celebrates Shades of Queer

In the midst of continuing challenges to the lives and rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, the University of Utah Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgendered Resource (LGBT) Center will celebrate Pride Week with the theme “Shades of Queer: Connecting through Difference.” The celebration, which runs from Oct. 18 to 22, provides an opportunity to share the rich diversity of the LGBTQ campus community.
