In a post on the U’s new blog, Whitney Evans, a graduate student in social work, recounts an after-school Costa Rican cooking class. “Beat, fold, blend, pour and plop in the oven… no big deal. Gata magically pulls the other pre-baked cakes out and they are lovely… and loaded with tiny ants. No big deal… wipe them off with a towel.” Lucky thing she’s not there to learn to cook.

David Eccles School of Business Welcomes New Dean

Taylor Randall, associate dean of academic affairs at the David Eccles School of Business, will replace Jack Brittain as the dean of the David Eccles School of Business on July 1, 2009. While Randall will not formally become dean until July 1, he will be in the leadership role immediately with Brittain’s support as he makes the transition.

Utah Job Market Still Seeks College Grads

Employers will hire 22 percent fewer college graduates nationwide this year, according to an annual survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). However, employers recruiting at the University of Utah this spring indicate they are still hiring. Tight budget restrictions mean fewer job openings than last year, but new job postings continue to come into the U’s Career Services Office.

U OF U COMMENCEMENT ON MAY 8 TO GRADUATE MORE THAN 7,100

April 27, 2009 — Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 8, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2009, comprised of 7,132 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 76 countries, 50 U.S. states and 28 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:20 a.m. Tickets are not required.
