2009 Diversity Awards Announced

Octavio Villalpando, associate vice president, Office for Equity and Diversity at the University of Utah announced today the recipients of the 14th Annual Equity and Diversity Awards. The awards are presented to outstanding individuals and organizations who have demonstrated sustained excellence in fostering leadership and a commitment to promote and enhance equity and diversity for students, staff and faculty at the University of Utah. Caitlin Cahill, Jannah J. Hurn Mather, Aretha M. Minor and Deidre Hughes Schoenfeld are this year’s award recipients.

“Together We Can”

“TOGETHER WE CAN” a five day celebration of the work and contributions of “Allies” to the LGBT Movement, and a breaking of the silence around issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender oppression, will be presented April 13 – 17, 2009. Ally Week is sponsored by the University of Utah Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, the Psychology Department and the student groups Queer Student Union and Queer Students of Color. All events will be held at the University of Utah, except as noted.

100 Years of Richard Wright

The University of Utah is honored to present “100 Years of Richard Wright: The Man, His Work and His Legacy” a three-day conference devoted to the examination of the work of the acclaimed writer who has been identified as “the most influential African American novelist that ever lived.” Wright’s daughter, Julia Wright, writer and civil rights advocate, will give the opening keynote address titled, “A Hurricane Called Bigger.”

Down to only five people, the board of directors for the Utah Animal-Assisted Therapy Association is looking for new members. “Like many other nonprofits, we’re challenged by finding individuals with the right mix of knowledge, interests, and skills,” said executive director Gaelyn Derr. “Say that we wanted an attorney with a background in mental health, or a physical therapist that has helped with fundraising events. Where do we even begin to look?” The answer might be right at her fingertips.

Recognizing Dedication to the Fight

On Friday, March 27, the University of Utah College of Social Work will present the 8th annual Pete Suazo Social Justice Awards, beginning at 3:00 pm in the Goodwill Humanitarian Building, 395 South 1500 East. The awards were developed to honor the life of the late Senator Suazo by recognizing the work of those who dedicate themselves to the goal of social and economic justice. This year, the prestigious awards will be presented to five individuals and two agencies: Denise Castañeda, Forrest Crawford, Linda Hilton, Sandra Asbury, Sheila Walsh-McDonald, the Central Region Refugee Support Team of the Department of Workforce Services, and the Human Rights Education Center of Utah.
