Sorenson Legacy Foundation Gives University of Utah $15 Million

The University of Utah has announced that the Sorenson Legacy Foundation has made the lead donation of $15 million to begin constructing a sophisticated 193,000-sq. ft. biomedical and neurosciences building designed to help create and develop the next wave of health sciences technology. Named the James L. Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building in honor of Utah’s world-renowned medical device inventor and entrepreneur, the facility will become the heart of the state’s $500 million Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR), and will anchor the university’s new “Interdisciplinary Quadrangle” on 11 acres bridging upper and lower campus. The announcement came Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 during the university’s “Together We Reach” fund-raising campaign gala.

Pride Week Celebrated at the U

Human rights activist, poet and teacher Ericka Huggins will give the keynote address at this year’s Pride Week Celebration at the University of Utah. Activate, Transform, Evolve is the title for Pride Week which will take place from October 20th through the 24th and will feature a variety of events. Huggins will speak on October 23 at noon in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. A “gay-la” dinner and silent auction will close the week’s events on October 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the IJ and Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center located at 2 North Medical Drive.

Homecoming 2008: Better Off Red!

Healthier, Happier Aging

Gradually, everything became more difficult for Jessie Goodwill. As she aged
everyday tasks, such as buying groceries, writing letters, and vacuuming her
living room, became increasingly challenging. Like many seniors, she wanted to
remain in her own home, but in order to do so, she needed help from her
children. Her son, Wilford Goodwill, watched his mother’s age and dependence on
others steadily increase. He realized that her story was not unique – there was
a clear need for more research and better programs for senior citizens. He
promised himself that when he had the financial capacity, he would do everything
possible to help others like his mother.

University of Utah Expands Diversity Initiatives

The University of Utah announced today that the Office for Diversity will expand its name to Equity and Diversity. Correspondingly, the university’s chief diversity officer, OctavioVillalpando, Ph.D., will assume the new title of Associate Vice President of Equity and Diversity. The expanded name will more accurately reflect the U”s efforts not only to increase its demographic diversity, but also to ensure greater equity in the educational, professional and personal experiences of all communities on campus.
