U of U Honorary Degree Recipients and Commencement Speaker Announced

Today, The University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary doctoral degrees for five individuals, which will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 2, 2008, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Given to individuals who merit special recognition for service or achievement, the awards will be presented to Claudia Skaggs Luttrell for Doctor of Humane Letters, Kent H. Murdock for Doctor of Humanities, David G. Neeleman for Doctor of Business, Dinesh C. Patel for Doctor of Business and to this year’s commencement speaker, Mario R. Capecchi, for Doctor of Science.

Researchers report that women’s magazines have ten and a half times more ads and articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines do and over three-quarters of the covers of women’s magazines include at least one message about how to change a woman’s bodily appearance-by diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery. Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 per cent less than the average woman, but today’s models weigh 23 per cent less. Real women’s bodies have become invisible in the mass media.

Living in former Yugoslavia, a country torn by ethnic conflict, my family faced the enormous challenge of surviving in a hostile urban war environment. We escaped, first fleeing as refugees to Hungry and then to Germany. New Home Construction Plummets in Utah-Condo and Apartment Permits Up

The number of building permits issued for new residential units in Utah dropped by 22 percent in 2007, the biggest decline in more than two decades, according to new data released today by the University of Utah’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR). The total number of dwelling permits issued in 2007 was 20,535 down from the 26,322 in 2006. New single-family units, which accounted for about two-thirds of all new dwelling units, declined at an even faster pace, dropping from 19,900 units in 2006 to 13,500 units in 2007, a decline of 32 percent.

Meet The Middle East Through Its Films

Film is the medium through which a culture creates itself. As the Middle East evolves its silver-screen identity, the University of Utah Middle East Center and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Film Center attempt to bring that identity to Americans by sponsoring a series of films from the region. The Middle East through its Films-2008 will be shown at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, every other Wednesday, 6-9 p.m. beginning January 30.

U of U Faculty to Teach Youth Leadership Course for West Salt Lake Youth

Two University of Utah faculty have designed and will teach a youth leadership course for West Salt Lake high school students beginning this month and running weekly until May. The 14-week course, Mestizo Arts and Activism Project, is the first course offered through Westside Leadership Institute (WLI) specifically designed for youth. The course is based on a participatory action research model that will engage young people as youth researchers using the arts as part of the research process and as a way to engage their community.
