RACE IN AMERICA – BEYOND BLACK AND WHITE

The United States is becoming increasingly diverse, and yet many discussions of race continue to be based on the assumption that issues can be seen as black and white. Frank Wu, author of Yellow: Race in American Beyond Black and White, and co-author of Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment will visit the University of Utah’s College of Social Work on Monday, October 22, to propose a paradigm shift for the discussion of civil rights.

3rd COHORT OF ADELANTE KINDERGARTNERS TOUR UNIVERSITY OF UTAH

The third cohort of kindergartners from Jackson Elementary in the Adelante program made their first visit to the University of Utah on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007. Forty-seven kindergartners from Jackson Elementary’s dual language immersion program are scheduled to receive a welcome from Mike Hardman, Dean of the College of Education, and then visit the Marriott Library & fountain and tour Rice-Eccles Stadium between 9:50am and 11:30 am.

Homecoming week at the University of Utah continues its tradition of stimulating social events, humanitarian efforts and festive fund raising as celebrations kick off September 24 with the traditional House Decorating contest and culminate September 29 with the Utah vs. Utah State football game at 1 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium, followed by the student dance at 9 p.m. The week is packed with activities for students, alumni and other Ute fans.

U of U AMERICAN INDIAN TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM RECEIVES $2 M IN GRANT MONIES

It was announced today that the University of Utah’s American Indian Teacher Training Program (AITTP) has been awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Indian Education totaling more than $2 million over four years. Grant funds will be used to continue the university’s successful teacher preparation program within the College of Education. One grant, totaling $1,062,385, will prepare teacher candidates in the areas of math and science. The other grant, a total of $983,704, will enable teacher aides to train to become certified teachers. Both grants focus on preparing American Indian or Alaska Native students to become teachers. AITTP staff and the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education are now actively recruiting students for the 2007 – 2008 school year.
