U. Business School Professor Contributes to Study on Political Campaign Donations

In anticipation to elections on Tuesday, a recent study by David Eccles School of Business finance professor, Michael Cooper, along with two other professors from University of Michigan and Virginia Polytechnic, shows companies giving to political campaigns see positive returns for their contributions. The study findings were summarized in a New York Times article on Sunday, November 5th.

The Financial Times has once again ranked the David Eccles School of Business Executive MBA program among the top programs in the world. According to the report, being published in the Oct. 23rd issue, the David Eccles School of Business Executive MBA program was ranked #30 in the United States and #69 in the world. Faculty research output was ranked #28 in the world.

U’s Wellness Fair Activities Include Free Health Screenings and 5K Race

University of Utah President Michael K. Young has declared next week, Oct. 23 through 27, Wellness Week at the U. In an effort to maintain a healthy and well-informed campus community, the Student Health Center will be sponsoring the sixteenth annual Wellness Fair, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the Union Ballroom. The fair has traditionally been a highlight of the week because of the free samples and health screenings. Last year more than 3,000 people attended the mid-week event.

David Korten to Speak at U Oct. 23rd

David Korten, author of the bestseller “When Corporations Rule the World” and “The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community,” will speak at the U on Monday, Oct. 23, from 1:30 until 3 p.m., in the old University’s Fine Arts Auditorium, 370 S. 1530 E., adjacent to the Arts and Architecture Building. The event is free and open to the public.

U of U Presents Two Lectures on Gifted Children

Eleven-year-old Michael was frustrated in school. A bright and talented boy, he was having problems reading and writing and made “careless errors” in math. He began calling himself “stupid” and “dumb.” His parents persisted in finding a reason for his challenges, so took him to visit physicians and learning specialists Brock and Fernette Eide, who confirmed Michael’s tremendous strengths as a learner, but also discovered the root of his problems: dyslexia.

Homecoming 2006 Features New 18-hole Golf Tournament

Homecoming Week at the University of Utah promises to be more exciting than ever this year, thanks to a beefed-up pep rally/concert and a new 18-hole golf tournament. Students from the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah will host the sixth annual Hunger Banquet, an event to raise awareness on campus and the greater community about local and global hunger issues. This year’s Hunger Banquet, themed “A World Without Hunger,” will be on Monday, Sept. 25, from 6 until 7:30 p.m., in the University”s Union Saltair Room. Matt Minkevitch, executive director of the Road Home, will be the featured speaker.

U of U Students Get Paid to Simulate Financial Markets

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, and throughout the coming academic year, University of Utah students will have the chance to earn while they learn. Students in the “Introduction to Investments” 3050 course-as well as U student volunteers-will discover how financial markets work by trading real securities within a two- to three-hour time period-and get paid according to their performance. Earnings vary-averaging from $20 to $30 an hour.

U’s “Legacy of Lowell Service Day” Set for Sept. 9th

Former University of Utah administrator Lowell Bennion is remembered for his service to the community-visiting widows, supporting social justice issues, working with students on Saturday morning service projects, gathering and delivering food for the hungry and founding the Bennion Teton Valley Boys Ranch. At the University, Bennion made contributions as the dean of students and as a faculty member in the U’s Department of Sociology-as well as in his role as director of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (LDS) Institute, located adjacent to the U.
