According to data gathered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost 20 million Americans are regular users of illicit drugs. Six million more abuse prescription drugs. Sixteen million abuse alcohol, with the number increasing over the last six years. Employed substance abusers cost their employers approximately twice as much in medical and worker compensation claims as non-using workers.

Immigration Continues to Fuel Growth in Western States and U.S.

Between the years 2000 and 2030, the populations of Arizona and Nevada are projected to double, with Nevada soon overtaking Utah to become the third most populous state in the Intermountain region. (At present Arizona ranks number one in the region, followed by Colorado, Utah and Nevada.) Immigration is projected to continue to contribute to the growth of the U.S. and Utah, just as it did during the beginning of the 20th century. However, the present wave of immigration is influencing Utah to a lesser extent than it is the nation as a whole, according to the latest issue of the Utah Economic and Business Review, a publication of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Utah.

U Alumni Association Board Welcomes Six New Members

Six community leaders and University of Utah graduates have been appointed to serve a three-year term on the U’s Alumni Association Board of Directors (UUAA). The new board members will join the current board of 24 to oversee myriad activities associated with four affiliated boards – the Beehive Honor Society, Emeritus Alumni, Young Alumni, and Student Alumni.
