Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Michael K. Young to Visit Schools in Salt Lake City and Granite Districts

While in Utah to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Utah on Friday, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Community of Caring, a national character education program now located in the Department of Special Education at the University of Utah, and U President Michael K. Young will visit two Community of Caring Schools. They are Salt Lake City School District’s North Star Elementary and Granite District”s William Penn Elementary.

First Recipient of Lori Kay Soares Hacking Scholarship to Graduate

The first recipient of the Lori Kay Soares Hacking Memorial Scholarship will graduate this Friday at the commencement ceremonies of the David Eccles School of Business scheduled for 4:15 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. In her application, scholarship recipient Linda Hines described herself as a student who refused to give up on her education, despite hardships in life. “Against all odds, I have overcome, I am a fighter, I am a believer,” wrote Hines.

Class of 2006 Faces Best Job Market in Three Years

Students graduating from the University next week will face the best job market in three years, according to a recent poll of colleges and universities, conducted by National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and posted to JobWeb.com, a career development and job-search site produced by NACE. Employers surveyed by NACE indicated that they will increase new college hiring in 2006 by 14.5 percent.

U of U Service-Learning Scholars to be Honored for More than 7,000 Hours of Community Service

Eighteen University of Utah students who completed 400 hours of community service each will be honored at the U’s commencement ceremonies on May 5, at 9 a.m., in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The U”s Bennion Community Service Center Service-Learning scholars were recently recognized for also completing 10 credit hours of service-learning classes and a major integrative service project (ISP) that combines academics with concentrated community work. Next week, the Service-Learning program, now in its fourteenth year, will graduate 18 students as compared to last year’s 12.

U of U Commencement on May 5 to Graduate More than 7,300

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 5, at 9 a.m., in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2006, comprised of 7,332 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 66 countries, 50 U.S. states and 25 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required.

Community Invited to Experience Diverse Offerings at First “Discover U Days” Celebration

From cutting-edge research to rowdy football, from stimulating lectures to theatre and dance, from Red Butte Garden to the Medical Center, the University of Utah offers myriad opportunities for learning and enjoyment. The community can get a sampling of these and other resources at the first annual “Discover U Days” celebration, to be held Friday and Saturday, Apr. 21 and 22. The two-day event will include the “Red & White” spring exhibition football game, beginning at 1 p.m., on Saturday, at Rice-Eccles Stadium, giving the public a much-anticipated preview of fall Utah football. All events are free and open to the public, with the exception of evening concerts, for which discounted tickets are available.

The Kresge Foundation Awards $800,000 Challenge Grant to Help Boost the College of Engineering Building Campaign

The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan has awarded the College of Engineering a challenge grant of $800,000 to be allocated in March 2007 if the college succeeds in raising the remaining $2.8 million of its $45 million comprehensive campaign goal. The college-focused campaign announced in 2002, includes $30 million for construction of the new engineering building as well as $15 million for scholarships, research, programs, and endowment. Sky-rocketing increases in construction costs created the $2.8 million gap, primarily for equipment, furnishings, and other IT infrastructure. In response to the challenge, the college will appeal to its alumni, corporate partners, and friends.

George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation $12 Million Challenge Grant Launches U Business School Building Campaign

With the announcement of its largest-ever challenge grant, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation today joined the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business in launching its $30 million campaign for new facilities, the first phase of a larger effort to enrich the college”s programs in the decade ahead. The $12 million grant will jump-start the school’s multi-year fund-raising effort to renovate its 1960″s-era buildings with state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities.
