New statewide initiative helps underserved high school students get to college

The University of Utah announces the launch of the Utah College Advising Corps (UCAC), a unique statewide initiative designed to increase college enrollment rates in Utah. The new initiative, funded by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, builds on successful partnerships with Utah System of Higher Education institutions to help all high school students including first generation students, students of color, and students facing financial barriers navigate the often difficult process of preparing, applying, and finding financial aid for college. Fourteen full-time College Access Advisors will be placed in high schools throughout the state over the next four years. The Advisors will work directly with students, teachers, parents and administrators to help students gain access to the colleges throughout the state.

NANOBUBBLES DELIVER TARGETED CANCER DRUGS USING ULTRASOUND

A new targeted drug delivery method uses ultrasound to image tumors, while also releasing the drug from “nanobubbles” into the tumor. Cancer drugs can be targeted to tumors by delivering them in packets of nanoparticles, then releasing them with ultrasound. But this approach can be difficult because it requires a way to image the tumor prior to treatment.

Early Fire Risk in the Santa Monicas

Researchers at the University of Utah and elsewhere have developed a new way to predict when vegetation dries to the point it is most vulnerable to large-scale fires in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles. And this year’s forecast says the highest-risk fire period will begin July 13 – weeks earlier than usual.

U of U Introduces New Nonprofit Academy for Excellence

The Nonprofit Academy of Excellence at the University of Utah is a new, certificate-based program created to inspire excellence in nonprofit management and governance. This unique program is customized for managers, staff, and trustees of Utah’s nonprofit community. It will teach enhanced organizational capacity and effectiveness to professionals and volunteers seeking training and development in nonprofit management. Developed in collaboration with the Utah Nonprofits Association and the Utah Society of Fund Raisers, the Academy is guided by an Advisory Committee of distinguished professionals from the nonprofit sector, representing corporate giving to board members to nonprofit management roles (see end for list of Committee members). The new program will begin in fall 2007, with new classes and cohorts beginning each spring and fall thereafter. An Open House on June 28 will provide additional information to anyone interested in learning more about the program.
