West High Students Shadow University of Utah Students in the “Leap to the U” Program

Thirty-four students from West High School will have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be in college by partnering with University of Utah students for “Shadow Day” on Wednesday, February 28th. The partnership is part of “LEAP to the U” one of the projects of the LEAP or “Learning, Engagement, Achievement, and Progress” (LEAP) Program. According to Carolan Ownby, Director of the LEAP Peer Advisors, “LEAP to the U is designed to encourage potential first generation students to think of college as a realistic possibility in the future.”

According to the Administration on Aging, more than 5,000 people celebrate their 65th birthday every day. Of these people 65 and older, only 32 percent use the Internet. The percentage has increased in the past six years from 15 percent, but there is still a large gap separating the older seniors from the 50 to 64 age bracket, 71 percent of whom surf the Web (Pew Internet & American Life Project).

Unbiased College Ranking System Showcases U of U Programs

College rankings are often criticized by administrators and prospective students as unscientific and nothing more than popularity contests. However, the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, now in its second year, is being touted as a much more fair way to judge institutions of higher education. The new ranking system rates faculty members’ scholarly output at nearly 7,300 doctoral programs around the country and, according to its results, the University of Utah is the state’s top school.
