U of U Athletes Compete in Winter Universiade

Italy seems to be everyone’s darling destination, both for work and play. This January 17-27, seven University of Utah (the U) athletes will play hard in the 2007 Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy. Ashlee Barnett, Becky Lang, April Medley, James Cholweinski, Patrick Meek, and Matthew Plummer will join the United States long track speed skating team and Tague Thorson of the U’s ski team will represent the U.S. in alpine skiing.

Donzaleigh Abernathy to Celebrate Black History Month in Utah

On February 7 and 8, 2007, Continuing Education, the Office of Diversity, and the Office of Institutional Advancement at the University of Utah will celebrate Black History Month with Donzaleigh Abernathy, daughter of Reverend Ralph David Abernathy. Donzaleigh is the youngest daughter of Rev. Abernathy, who co-founded the Civil Rights Movement with his closest friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As far back as she can remember, Donzaleigh’s father greatly impacted her life, leading her to publish a book, Partners to History, and to create a play, NIAGARA REMEMBERS JOHN BROWN, honoring Black History month. She will bring both of these to Utah in early February, in public appearances on February 7 and 8.

U of U study concludes size of families impacts health of parents

Large families reduce the chances of survival for parents, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Utah (the U). The study, published in the current issue of The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and entitled “Differential fitness costs of reproduction between the sexes,” analyzed data from over 21,000 couples married between 1860 and 1895 identified in the Utah Population Database. The research team, led by Dr. Ken Smith at the University of Utah and Dr. Dustin Penn at the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology, found that the more children couples had, the greater their risk of mortality.

Utah Study Reveals the Face of Minimum Wage Earners in Utah

A new study by researchers in the Center for Public Policy & Administration at the University of Utah shows the majority of workers earning the minimum wage in Utah are young men. National data shows women are most likely to earn no more than the current minimum wage of $5.15 per hour. Other than the difference in gender, the Utah data shows an overall similarity to the national findings.
