$1.2 Million Eccles Foundation Gift to U of U Creates 30 New Scholarships for Utah Freshmen

A $1.2 million donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation will fund 30 new scholarships at the University of Utah. The scholarships are earmarked for incoming freshman students from throughout the state of Utah who have shown academic excellence and financial need. Valued at nearly $9,000 per student annually, the awards will cover tuition, fees, books and on-campus housing for the students’ first two years of study at the University. The first George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Scholars will be awarded this spring for students entering the U next fall.

University of Utah Chicano Scholarship Fund Receives $50K Gift from Ibarra Foundation

The University of Utah Chicano/a Scholarship Fund (CSF) announced today the receipt of a major donation from the Ibarra Foundation created by Utah brothers David and Mickey Ibarra. The $50,000 gift will establish three renewable, full-ride Ibarra Foundation Scholarships through the Chicano/a Scholarship Fund. The first two scholarships will be presented to freshmen students in the amount of $5,000 each, per year, for four years for a total of $40,000. The third scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior and will be funded for two years at $5,000 per year for a total of $10,000. This will bring the Ibarra Foundation’s total commitment to the University of Utah to $50,000 to be given over a period of four years. Scholarship winners will be announced at the Chicano/a Scholarship banquet on May 9, 2006.

Donors Present Matching Challenge to Save Block U

Two renowned philanthropists and new supporters of the University of Utah are challenging others to join in a grassroots effort to save the Block U symbol on the hills behind campus. During this year’s Founders Day Celebration, Ira A. and Mary Lou Fulton declared they would match each donation from alumni, faculty, staff and students of up to $1,000 per individual for renovation of the Block U.

“Women at War” Panel to Address Changing Roles: WWII, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq War Veterans

This Wednesday, March 8, at 3 p.m., a diverse cross-section of military women will participate in a panel discussion in the East Ballroom of the University of Utah’s Union Building. The University of Utah American West Center’s “Women at War” presentation will feature four women who served in the Armed Forces during times of war. They will compare experiences and share perspectives on women in the military.
