Start-up Company at the U Seeks Stem-cell Solutions to Restoring Kidney Functions

Restoring kidney function with stem cells could be as easy as donating blood. Nephrogen, LLC is a new biotechnology start-up company located in Research Park at the University of Utah. Scientists at Nephrogen are exploring the therapeutic potential of adult stem cells collected from blood. The technology of Nephrogen is based on the collaboration of two physicians; one from the University of Utah, and the other from Germany (the University of Hamburg). Dr. Christof Westenfelder is a professor of medicine and physiology at the University of Utah as well as section chief of Nephrology at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Partner, Dr. Axel Zander is also a professor of medicine and the director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the University of Hamburg in Germany.

University of Utah Celebrates International Week

The International Center at the University of Utah will host the 2006 International Week celebration Monday, February 27, through Friday, March 3. University President, Michael K. Young, will kick off the week long festivities on Monday at noon in the Union building dining area by announcing the names of fifteen study abroad scholarship winners. Immediately following Young’s remarks the African Student Association will present “Africa Day” featuring African inspired performances and food. International Week events highlight international students at the University as well as international opportunities for University of Utah students, staff and faculty.

Compelling Lectures Focus of Founders Day Commemoration

Founders Day at the University of Utah will be celebrated this year with a series of compelling lectures by distinguished alumni. One of the talks, by author Matthew R. Simmons, deals with a topic of great importance today to people all over the world-Middle East oil. Simmons will discuss his much heralded book, Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy. The lecture is set for Feb. 22 at the Hinckley Institute of Politics, 255 Orson Spencer Hall, at 2 p.m.

Air Force Reserve Surgeon Returns from Iraq to Help with Start-up Company that Fights Cancer

Dr. James McGreevy will have little time to rest as he returns from his 8-week tour of duty in Iraq as a flight surgeon. He is co-founder and co-inventor of the technology behind Vestan-a medical imaging technology company that has recently been granted a Virtual Incubator Program Award (VIP Award) from the University of Utah’s Technology Commercialization Office and the University of Utah Research Foundation. Upon his return from Iraq, Dr. McGreevy plans to resume his clinical duties at the University of Utah Hospital by February 1, 2006.

Olympic Cauldron to Burn Again at the University of Utah

In recognition of the XX Olympic Winter Games, which will be held Feb. 10 through 26, in Torino, Italy, Utah’s own Olympic Cauldron will be lit during the evening hours on Feb. 10, 11 and 12 and will burn until 11 p.m. The University is extending a special invitation to the public to visit the Olympic Cauldron Park and the Salt Lake 2002 Visitors Center, located on the south end of the U’s Rice-Eccles Stadium, 500 S. 1400 E. The Park will have extended hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, and will be open from noon until 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12.
