U of U Computer Server Compromised

A University of Utah department computer has been compromised by an unknown outside source, ultimately leading to unauthorized access of the server, according to the University of Utah Office of Information Technology. The server contained library archival databases including a file with approximately 100,000 names and social security numbers of former University employees. The database included information used as an index for archives for paper employee files from 1970 to 2003.

First Cohort of Community-Based Latino Students to Graduate from University’s English Language Institute

Many immigrants come to Utah with knowledge and strong job skills, but lack fluency in the English language. Not speaking and writing the language well severely limits opportunities for employment and educational advancement. That is why the University of Utah’s English Language Institute (ELI), within the U’s division of Continuing Education, and Zions Bank teamed up earlier this year to offer community-based English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for graduates of local public school ESL programs who desired advanced training.

Tech Spin-off Companies Get Boost

The University of Utah has announced the creation and launch of a competitive grant program designed to enhance the potential success of spin-off companies that use technology created at the University. The program is entitled “Virtual Incubator Projects” (VIP’s) and will allow new spin-off companies to compete for awards of up to $50,000 in research voucher credits for sponsored research at the University. Five VIP’s will be awarded each year for a cumulative program total of $250,000.

University Singers Receive Top Honors at International Competition

The University of Utah Singers, a mixed choir made up of 46 University students, recently brought home six awards-including the grand prize-from the Florilege Vocal de Tour International Choir Competition, held in Tours, France, on May 14 and 15. The competition included 18 choirs from 12 nations. The event was part of a month-long European tour for the U students.
