Third District Judge Reaffirms U’s No Guns on Campus Policy

In a ruling issued today in the Third District Court, Judge Robert K. Hilder, reaffirmed the University of Utah’s policy which bans concealed weapons on its campus. Hilder determined that the University is and has always acted within the law by maintaining policies that prohibit students, faculty and staff from bringing weapons onto campus. The University has maintained this decades-long practice to ensure a safe learning environment and to nurture an environment that encourages the free exchange of ideas. The judge further stated that the Utah laws at issue do not interfere with the U’s internal policies regarding student and employee conduct.

Orientation For International Students Eases Scholars Into Life In The U.S.

By joining the University International Center’s Cross-Culture Club she met other women in situations similar to her own. U of U Rape Aggression Defense Course Teaches Self-Defense Options, Simulates Attacks

On Wednesday the University of Utah Police Department launched a six-week Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) course, part of a national program to teach and enhance self-defense options for women. The weekly, three-hour, women-only project will be held in the Huntsman Center lounge. The course advocates awareness, prevention, risk reduction, avoidance and then progresses onto the basics of hands-on defense training. Students participate in simulated attacks, which are videotaped and then reviewed to identify students’ strengths and vulnerabilities. U of U Officials Respond to NCAA Public Infractions Report

Officials at the University of Utah publicly responded today to an NCAA public infractions report released earlier in the day involving violations within the University’s men’s basketball, football, and women’s track and field programs. On hand to discuss the NCAA’s report, as well as the U’s own corrective measures, and to answer questions from reporters were President Bernie Machen, Athletic Director Chris Hill, men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus, and Vice President for University Relations Fred Esplin.

Renowned Pianists to Perform at U of U Summerarts Piano Festival

The University of Utah SummerArts Piano Festival is an on-site camp that offers young pianists and college students master classes and competitions. This year the event will be held Aug. 6 through 9. While festival courses are structured for the 200 to 300 registered participants, special performances by festival featured artists Ana Maria Trenchi Bottazzi and Juana Zayas will be given for the public. Bottazzi will perform on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7:30. Juana Zayas will present on Friday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Both concerts will be held in Libby Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus.
