U of U to Review Its Long Range Development Plan

The University of Utah has retained the services of Hanbury Evans Wright & Vlattas and ajc architects to provide campus land-planning services for the five-year update of its 1997 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Opportunities for public comment and participation are an important part of the process. The LRDP is a broad campus land-use and transportation plan projected over a 20-year planning horizon. Guidelines are established which maintain and enhance the campus environment while supporting the University’s mission of education, research, and service.

U Names New Director of Women’s Resource Center

Debra S. Daniels will be the new director of the University of Utah’s Women’s Resource Center when Kathryn Brooks retires July 11 after 14 years of service in that position. Daniels’ appointment is effective July 14 and follows the completion of a national search for the position.

How Ants Secretly Damage Rainforests

Some tree-dwelling ants that were thought to eat other insects and animals actually look like plant-eaters when biologists analyzed nitrogen in their bodies. The study revealed the ants mostly eat plant nectar and the “honeydew” excreted by parasitic insects that suck sap from trees, suggesting the ants indirectly cause far more damage to tropical rainforests than previously believed.

U of U Seniors Exhibit Art Downtown May 16-June 14

Painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and other forms of art will be exhibited and up for sale at the University of Utah’s upcoming 2003 Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Art Show. Scheduled to run from May 16 through June 14, the exhibit will be held at Artspace Forum Gallery, 511 West 200 South, in downtown Salt Lake City. The show, comprised of 50 pieces and curated by Ephraim Puusemp, displays works representative of the 2003 graduating class of the University of Utah’s art program. Artspace is open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon until 5 p.m. There is no cost for admission.

Distinguished Professor Sung Wan Kim Receives 2003 Rosenblatt Prize at U of U Commencement

Sung Wan Kim, Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering, was honored at today’s Commencement with the Rosenblatt Prize, the University of Utah’s highest award for excellence. The $40,000 gift is presented annually to a faculty member who displays excellence in teaching, research, and administrative efforts.

U Students Postpone School and Graduation to Serve in War

Twenty-three-year-old Eric Alder enrolled in winter semester at the University of Utah and was planning to graduate in economics this Friday, May 2. He was in the process of filling out the forms for his commencement cap and gown when his U.S. Marine Corps reserve unit-“Charlie Company”-was called up in March to assist with the war effort in Iraq. Instead of donning graduation robes this week, he is fulfilling various assignments in Iraq while enduring 110-degree heat.

Utah Mathematician Appointed President to Lead CMI
