March of Dimes Awards $250,000 Prize to Pioneers in Genetic Research

University of Utah geneticist Mario Capecchi has won numerous prizes for developing “gene targeting,” a method of knocking a gene out of action in mice to determine what goes wrong and thereby identify the gene’s normal function. Today, May 9, 2005, the March of Dimes announced it has awarded its Prize in Developmental Biology to Capecchi and University of North Carolina researcher Oliver Smithies for their roles in developing gene targeting.

More than 7,000 Set to Graduate from U of U on May 6

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 6, at 9 a.m., in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2005, comprised of 7,414 graduates, will receive their degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 68 countries, 50 U.S. states and 26 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are not required

University of Utah Receives $7 Million Gift From Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles

University of Utah President Michael K. Young last night announced a personal gift of $7 million from U alumni Spencer and Cleone Eccles. This gift, committed confidentially last summer, provides major funding for the new, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Education Building for the U’s nationally ranked medical, nursing, pharmacy, and health training programs. The gift was announced by Young at a dinner capping off a week-long celebration on his inauguration as the 14th president of the University of Utah.

Trustees Approve Honorary Degree Recipients and Commencement Speaker

Today, the University of Utah Board of Trustees approved honorary doctoral degrees for six individuals, which will be presented at this year’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 6, 2005, in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The degrees, awarded to individuals who merit special recognition for service or achievement, will be presented to Robert F. Bennett for Doctor of Laws; Edwin E. Catmull for Doctor of Engineering; Katherine W. Dumke for Doctor of Humane Letters; C.A. “Arnie” Ferrin for Doctor of Humane Letters; Marta Sutton Weeks for Doctor of Humane Letters; and to this year’s commencement speaker, The Most Reverend George H. Niederauer, for Doctor of Humane Letters.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Appoints 43 Investigators Including Two from U of U

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) announced today the
selection of its new HHMI investigators, which are, according to HHMI’s news release, “the nation’s most promising biomedical scientists.” Among these prestigious scientists are two University of Utah researchers – Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D., associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy, and Erik M. Pharmacy Dean to Lead National Board

John W. Mauger, Ph.D., has been elected chairman of the 2005 – 2010 board of trustees at the recently concluded U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention in Washington, D.C. Dr. Mauger is dean of the College of Pharmacy and professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Utah.

Known Alzheimer’s Genetic Marker Carriers More Likely to Alter Long-Term Care Insurance

According to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah, Boston University and Duke University, those who tested positive for the presence of a specific allele of the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, one of the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, were 5.76 times more likely to subsequently alter their long-term care insurance than those who did not receive the genotype disclosure.
