Patch Adams to Speak at U of U

University of Utah philosophy student Markham McReynolds was so inspired by the movie “Patch Adams” and Adams’ book Gesundheit, that last semester he founded the campus Compassionate Care Group, which is now bringing the real-life Patch Adams to campus on Thursday, Feb. 19. Adams will present “Medicine for Fun, Not for Funds,” from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m., in the Skaggs Hall Auditorium at the College of Pharmacy, located at 30 S. 2000 E. Copies of Adams’ book will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Lorris Betz Appointed Interim President of University of Utah

In a meeting of the University of Utah Board of Trustees Monday, State Board of Regents Chair Nolan E. Karras announced that Dr. Lorris Betz has been appointed as Interim President of the University of Utah, effective January 1, 2004. Dr. Betz, currently the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine, and CEO of the University of Utah Health System, will serve as Interim President until a new President is appointed later in 2004. “Dr. Betz is a capable administrator, and we are confident that with his leadership the University will continue to function very effectively while we continue the search for a new President,” stated Chair Karras. “We are grateful that he is willing to accept the assignment to serve in the important role of Interim President.”

$10 Million Grant from ALSAM Foundation Allows Construction of New Moran Eye Center to Move Forward Ahead of Schedule

Officials at the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center today announced a $10 million grant from the ALSAM Foundation to help fund construction of a new 200,000 square-foot facility. The grant allows the center to begin work on its $53 million project by the end of November. A formal groundbreaking is planned for early spring.

U’s Wellness Week Activities Range From Fair to Mile Walk to Alcohol-Free Halloween Party

University of Utah students, faculty, staff and the greater community can learn more about health and wellness during the U’s Wellness Week, Oct. 28 through 31. The 13th Annual Wellness Fair, traditionally a highlight of the week because of the giveaways and free health information, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29th, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., in the U’s Olpin Union Ballroom. Last year more than 2,000 people attended the mid-week event.

University of Utah researchers have identified genes that ensure nerves develop in the correct part of the brain so mice can roll their eyeballs sideways, wiggle their whiskers, pull their ears back and blink their eyelids. The genes are common to all mammals, and so they likely help control human facial expressions such as smiles and frowns.
