Did Dr. King Die in Vain?

April 4 marks the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death. To commemorate his impact on life in America now and in the future, the University of Utah law school is bringing together a diverse group of authorities to examine provocative questions about race, education, housing and security in light of current American legal issues. The program will feature Julian Bond, National Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Avery Friedman, civil rights attorney and CNN National Correspondent; and Col. Morris Davis, the former chief military prosecutor at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Yale Law Prof to Discuss Immigration Reforms at Evening Event

On March 5, Peter Schuck, a renowned immigration law specialist and professor at Yale Law School, will share his expertise with the public at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law’s periodic Social Summit. The event will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Squatters Restaurant, 147 W. 300 South in Salt Lake City. Cost is $10 per person.

Stegner Center to Examine Alternative Energy Sources

The search for solutions to climate change caused by man-made emissions is the focus of this year’s Stegner Symposium. Bill McKibben, the noted writer, educator, and environmentalist, will present the keynote address, “Building the Climate Movement-Just in Time.” Author of the 1989 book The End of Nature, the first book on climate change for a general audience, McKibben is the author of several additional works and helped found Stepitup07.org, the first large grassroots activist movement to address climate change.

Understanding Migration

Living in former Yugoslavia, a country torn by ethnic conflict, my family faced the enormous challenge of surviving in a hostile urban war environment. We escaped, first fleeing as refugees to Hungry and then to Germany. With the clothing on our backs and no money in our pockets, my family made an ambitious effort to pursue a better life in the U.S. Having little knowledge of the American culture and no knowledge of the English language we reached for the “American Dream.”
