U to Focus on Global Warming Solutions

The University of Utah is participating in Focus the Nation, a national educational and civic engagement initiative aimed at uniting millions of US citizens to find solutions to global warming. With more than 10,000 volunteers hosting events at over 1,300 schools, and with faith, civic, and business organizations participating on Thurs., January 31, Focus the Nation will be the largest Teach-in in history. The University of Utah announced today that Beverly Fenton has been selected as the director of the American Indian Resource Center (AIRC). Fenton becomes the first director since the center was established in January 1996 to aid in the recruitment, retention, and support of American Indian students. She begins work on January 2, 2008.

Family Visiting for the Holidays? What’s the Story?

The holidays are when families come together to pass on stories from generation to generation. Now the S.J. Quinney College of Law is making available a forum to anyone who wants to share their tales with a wider audience. Submissions are being sought of brief monologues about family from faculty, staff, students, and community members. These monologues will be performed on the evening of February 28, 2008, as part of a conference on the New Frontiers in Family Law hosted by the College of Law and Gender Studies Program.

RACE IN AMERICA – BEYOND BLACK AND WHITE

The United States is becoming increasingly diverse, and yet many discussions of race continue to be based on the assumption that issues can be seen as black and white. Frank Wu, author of Yellow: Race in American Beyond Black and White, and co-author of Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment will visit the University of Utah’s College of Social Work on Monday, October 22, to propose a paradigm shift for the discussion of civil rights.
