U of U Honors 11 Utah Veterans at 13th Annual Commemoration Ceremony

Unarmed, Donald Ward Petersen and the rest of his B-24 crew were given the command to abandon their aircraft, which had been shot by Germans over Innsbruck, Austria. When Petersen landed in the mountains above a small village, a villager found him and led him at gunpoint into the hands of the German Gestapo. The Gestapo took him to Innsbruck and to Luft Stalag IV in what is today Poland, where he was held as a POW for the remaining 11 months of World War II. He became part of the forced march across Poland and Germany that lasted three months in freezing conditions.

U of U Commencement on May 7 to Graduate More than 7,000

Commencement ceremonies at the University of Utah will be held on Friday, May 7, at 9 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The class of 2010, comprised of 7,034 graduates, will receive degrees that morning. The procession of diverse students, who come from 76 countries, 50 U.S. states and 27 of Utah’s 29 counties, will begin at 8:20 a.m. Guests should plan to be in their seats prior to 8:20 a.m. Tickets are not required.

Tom Maloney to Lead Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy

Tom Maloney, associate professor of economics at the University of Utah, will be the new director of the Barbara L. and Norman Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy. The announcement was made today by David Rudd, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Maloney replaces George Cheney who has accepted a position as an endowed chair in Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and will be leaving by the fall of 2010.

Putting Students in the Hot Seat: Decision-Making During a Simulated National Security Crisis

The public will have the opportunity to observe how public officials might react in the face of a terrorist attack, at least in theory. The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law will present a live counterterrorism simulation on Friday, March 19, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and continuing through the evening. The public can watch the exercise in real time in person or via video broadcast at the law school’s Sutherland Moot Courtroom. It will be available online at http://dashboard.law.utah.edu.
