U Alum Builds for Future Engineering Students

The University of Utah today announced a $3.3 million lead gift for its department of civil and environmental engineering. The gift, from U alum Floyd Meldrum and his wife Jeri, of Las Vegas, Nevada, is the cornerstone in a $5 million campaign to strengthen civil engineering. Their gift will help fund a 14,500 square foot expansion of an existing laboratory and office building. When complete, the expanded building will be renamed the Floyd and Jeri Meldrum Civil and Environmental Engineering Building, in recognition of their total giving to the University which now exceeds $3.5 million.

U Lands $21.2M Software Grant

The University of Utah has been awarded a software gift valued at $21.2 million from Landmark, a product service line of Halliburton’s Drilling and Evaluation Division. The three-year, renewable donation provides advanced software, including maintenance and support, to students and researchers in the College of Engineering and the College of Mines and Earth Sciences, especially those that focus on studying energy development. The software is used to help find oil and gas resources more efficiently.

USING SOUND TO TURN HEAT INTO ELECTRICITY

University of Utah physicist Orest G. Symko will discuss his effort to develop acoustic heat-engine devices that convert heat into electricity – a new technology that holds promise for utilizing waste heat, harnessing solar energy and cooling computers and radar equipment. Symko will demonstrate several of the devices during his free public lecture.

NEW OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICIALLY OPENS IN CONJUNCTION WITH CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT DAY

The University of Utah has established a new Office of Sustainability (OS) to support its commitment to becoming a more sustainable campus. President Michael K. Young formally launched this initiative with a presentation today on the west patio of the Olpin Student Union Building. The event was held in conjunction with Campus Environmental Impact Day sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU).
