U of U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Keeps People 50 and Over Younger

This spring, lifelong learners 50 and over in Salt Lake City and Bountiful have even more chances to learn together through the class offerings at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Mature adults will come together to explore their internal resources, find new dimensions for growth, and reexamine their histories beginning April 2. They’ll study together in courses they chose, developed specifically for them by subject experts. Thirty-four weekly classes and a variety of special events will be offered during the U’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute spring term. Registration opens March 13.

Deputy Director of the Peace Corps and Founders Day Honoree to Stress the Importance of Service

The rewards of serving others will be the focus of a talk by Josephine K. Olsen during this year’s University of Utah Alumni Association Founders Day celebration. Olsen, deputy director of the Peace Corps, is one of five Founders Day recipients being honored by the Alumni Association. Her address, Giving Your All & Getting Back More: The Transformative Power of Service, will be delivered on Monday, March 5, 3 to 4 p.m. at the Alumni House, Burbidge Board Room, 155 So. Two U Faculty Get Big Engineering Honor

Two University of Utah faculty members have been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, the group announced Friday. The two researchers are Anil Virkar, professor and chair of materials science and engineering, and William A. Hustrulid, professor emeritus of mining engineering and now a consultant at Hustrulid Mining Services in Bonita Springs, Fla.

John E. and Marva M. Warnock Engineering Building Opens New Era of Exploration and Discovery

Dedicated to the spirit of exploration and discovery, the John and Marva Warnock Engineering Building is the new academic home for engineering and computer science students at the University of Utah. The building will be officially dedicated during a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, February 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the atrium of the new building located at 72 S. Central Campus Drive.

New Research Stars for USTAR

Under an initiative to attract world-class scientists and boost Utah’s economy, the University of Utah has hired experts on high-speed wireless communication, computer analysis of medical images and underground storage of carbon dioxide gas to combat global warming and extract oil.
“The University of Utah is pleased to announce the appointments of some of the first faculty members under the Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) initiative,” says David Pershing, senior vice president for academic affairs. “These are the first of what we hope ultimately will be a few dozen outstanding new faculty members under the initiative.”

This winter, lifelong learners age 50 and over at the University of Utah will come together to explore their internal resources, find new dimensions for growth, and reexamine their histories. They’ll study together in courses they chose, developed specifically for them by subject experts.
