David Korten to Speak at U Oct. 23rd

David Korten, author of the bestseller “When Corporations Rule the World” and “The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community,” will speak at the U on Monday, Oct. 23, from 1:30 until 3 p.m., in the old University’s Fine Arts Auditorium, 370 S. 1530 E., adjacent to the Arts and Architecture Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The Utah Museum of Natural History Hires Its First Capital Campaign Director

Chris Eisenberg, known for strong community ties, commitment to the nonprofit sector, and fundraising expertise, has joined the Utah Museum of Natural History at the University of Utah as its capital campaign director. Mr. Eisenberg, former station manager at KCPW public radio, will work with museum staff over the next several years to complete a comprehensive fundraising campaign to raise an approximate $35 million of the $65 million needed to build the state’s new natural history museum. The new museum is scheduled to be built on University land, south of Red Butte Garden and Arboretum.

Micron Gift Funds Equipment and Furnishings for New Engineering Building

The University of Utah College of Engineering today announced a $250,000 gift from the Micron Technology Foundation for equipment, technology infrastructure and furnishings for the $30 million John E. and Marva M. Warnock Engineering Building. When completed in October 2006, the 100,000 square-foot Warnock Building will provide the academic hub for the nearly 3,500 engineering students, faculty and staff members at the University of Utah, as well as a gathering space for visitors and the community.

U to Build Telescope in Southern Utah

The Willard L. Eccles Foundation donated $600,000 so the University of Utah can build a 32-inch, research-class, optical telescope in southern Utah. The project is part of an effort to establish a full-fledged astronomy program at the university and perhaps to create a high-altitude observatory that will attract other new telescopes to the state.

U Alumni Association Board Welcomes Six New Members

Six community leaders and University of Utah graduates have been appointed to serve a three-year term on the U’s Alumni Association Board of Directors (UUAA). The new board members will join the current board of 24 to oversee myriad activities associated with four affiliated boards – the Beehive Honor Society, Emeritus Alumni, Young Alumni, and Student Alumni.
