November 19, 2003 — An accident involving a van and several pedestrians occurred on the University of Utah campus today at 8:10 a.m. A van traveling eastbound on South Campus Drive struck a group of pedestrians who were headed south in the crosswalk. The pedestrians – three U students and one instructor – were transported to local hospitals and are listed in fair to good condition. All four were able to give their names and other information to the University police on the scene. The U Police are investigating the cause of the accident and should have their report later today.
“I appreciate the fast response of our University Police who were immediately on the scene to render assistance,” stated Stayner Landward, dean of students. “My office will be contacting the students and the instructor to offer available university services, and we have notified key personnel of their absence from the classrooms.”
Ben Lemmon, U chief of police, cautioned that, “With the new TRAX line traveling through the center of campus and the modification of key intersections, it is imperative that all students, staff, faculty and visitors to our campus be cognizant of their surroundings. We all need to be vigilant when traveling on campus roads, whether as pedestrians or motorists.”
