April 23, 2007 — Seventy years is a long time to live under the same roof. This April, the University of Utah’s College of Social Work celebrates its expanding horizons at the groundbreaking for its new Wilford W. and Dorothy P. Goodwill Humanitarian Building. The event will take place on April 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. on the grounds adjacent to the College of Social Work building, 395 South, 1500 East.

The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will include remarks from University of Utah President Michael K. Young, Vice President David Pershing and community philanthropist Wilford W. Goodwill, as well as refreshments and musical entertainment.

The new facility, funded by the Reaching Out, Enriching Minds, Changing Lives Capital Campaign, will serve the needs of the college, the university and the community by providing space for the Initiatives on Aging and its Neighbors Helping Neighbors program, a new state-of-the-art clinical training center, a community meeting center and a technology enhanced classroom.

“The faculty and staff at the College of Social Work take pride in our legacy of training, outreach and collaboration,” notes the college’s dean, Jannah J. Mather. “With the groundbreaking for the Wilford W. and Dorothy P. Goodwill Humanitarian Building, we look forward to expanding our reach in all of those areas.”

Mather explains that with the new building, students will benefit from state-of-the-art training facilities, faculty will enjoy greater opportunities for research and program development and community agencies can plan on increased partnerships for the collective purposes of education, preparation and service.

“The Goodwill Humanitarian Building provides a venue in which the College of Social Work can advance its mission without losing sight of its main responsibility: to provide the community with social workers who strive to meet the humanitarian needs of our fellow citizens,” Mather says. “The new facility serves as our tribute to the past and promise to the future.”
