September 20, 2002 — On Tuesday, October 1, Adobe Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder John E. Warnock will speak at the 12th annual Spencer Fox Eccles Convocation, which will be held at Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Dumke Auditorium at 11 a.m. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the role of Spencer Eccles in the naming of the School after his grandfather, David Eccles. Convocation speakers are chosen as those who have in some way exemplified the entrepreneurial spirit of David Eccles, and they present current issues in business.

Warnock earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in math at the University of Utah, and went on to earn his PhD in electrical engineering from the U. as well. He also holds an honorary degree in science from the University of Utah. Since Warnock co-founded Adobe in 1982 with Dr. Charles Geschke, the two have worked closely together to develop a stream of pioneering software products that leverage Adobe’s core strengths in graphics, publishing and electronic document technology. Warnock shares the chairmanship of the board with Geschke. Warnock holds six patents, has contributed many articles to both technical journals and industry magazines, and is a frequent speaker on critical issues in computer and publishing industries.

“We are very excited to have John Warnock come and speak to our students,” said Jack Brittain, Dean of the David Eccles School of Business. “His expertise in both technology and business serve as a wonderful example for our students, and as an alumnus of the U., he can provide very real motivation.”

Before co-founding Adobe Systems, Warnock was principal scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. And before that, he held key positions at Evans & Sutherland Computer Corporation, Computer Sciences Corporation, IBM and the University of Utah.
