December 12, 2007-The holidays are when families come together to pass on stories from generation to generation. Now the S.J. Quinney College of Law is making available a forum to anyone who wants to share their tales with a wider audience. Submissions are being sought of brief monologues about family from faculty, staff, students, and community members. These monologues will be performed on the evening of February 28, 2008, as part of a conference on the New Frontiers in Family Law hosted by the College of Law and Gender Studies Program.
Monologues can take a variety of forms, including prose, poetry, song, etc. They must be under five minutes in length and address experiences and thoughts related to the theme “New Frontiers of the Family.” This could include, for example, stories about new family forms, family functions, and new geographic boundaries of the family.
The aim of the call for submissions is to collect stories from diverse women and men with different perspectives and experiences related to the family, intimacy, kinship, and relatedness. In this spirit, organizers are welcoming family stories relating to race, ethnicity, class, gender expression, sexuality, and religion. Additional monologue themes might include marriage and divorce, cohabitation, blended families, extended families, motherhood, fatherhood, alternative reproduction, adoption, choosing not to have children, gay people parenting, polygamy and polyamory, elder care, and friendship.
A distinguished panel of judges will select monologues with an eye toward representing the range of family stories submitted. Selected monologues can be performed either by the author, or if you prefer, a performer.
