New Budget Expert Hired

January 19, 2011-Cathy Anderson has been hired as associate vice president (AVP) for Budget and Planning at the University of Utah. She will replace Paul Brinkman, who is retiring June 30, 2011, and will assume oversight of two campus offices: budget and institutional analysis.

Anderson will interact with deans and directors of academic units and play a central role in the setting of tuition and fees; student financial aid budgets; the management of various discretionary funds; and the management of selected student, faculty and financial data elements. She will also be responsible for reporting budgetary figures to state and federal agencies.

In her new role, Anderson will work closely with administrative services and student affairs while supporting the office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dave Pershing. “Cathy has demonstrated her ability to lead effectively in matters of finance and budget and has a good understanding of resources needed to make sure the university continues to excel as a world-class academic institution of higher learning and research,” said Pershing. “She has proven to be honest, ethical and open, with the ability to exercise good judgment in complex situations.”

Since May 2003, Anderson has held the position of associate dean of finance for the university’s School of Medicine. In that role, she has been responsible for the financial operations within the dean’s office and providing financial oversight and leadership for the school’s clinical and basic science departments and programs.

Anderson will now play a key role within central administration, participating in meetings of the Academic Senate, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Regents, as well as legislative hearings. She will advise in the development and implementation of plans that integrate capital, fiscal and human resource considerations in all areas of the main campus. She will advise on financial and resource planning matters and coordinate financial planning with counterparts in University Health Sciences. Another of Anderson’s critical roles will be to represent the university in dealings with the Utah System of Higher Education and other external agencies on budgetary matters.
