Jan. 15, 2014 – The Technology Education program at the University of Utah will offer a new course to prepare Information Technology professionals for one of the most useful cybersecurity certifications available beginning Jan. 27, 2014. The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner Certification, CASP, class will teach students how to set up multiple levels of defense to protect the confidentiality, availability and integrity of a company’s IT assets and information.

“Hundreds of thousands of peoples’ personal information is compromised through security flaws and causes millions of dollars in lost revenue and mitigation expenses to businesses,” said Inita Lyon, director of Technology Education. “Small businesses are especially at risk because they have fewer resources to recover after a successful attack, and one of the best defenses against these types of breaches is to have a staff thoroughly trained in cybersecurity.”

The CASP preparation course will cover topics including cryptographic tools and techniques, comprehensive security solutions, securing virtualized and shared computing, host security, application security and penetration testing, risk management, policies, procedures and incident response, analysis enterprise security, as well as security controls.

“With the rise of cyber security breaches targeting businesses of all sizes, it is important for businesses to understand the issues that threaten them and how to defend against them,” said Mike Wright, instructor and CEO of a cybersecurity training company called Excellent Training. “It is crucial that small businesses, which often don’t have IT staff, use the same security strategies that larger businesses with skilled staff use.”
