POISON OR PANACEA? FLUORINE IN OUR ENVIRONMENT
From Fluoridated Water to Teflon, the Risks and Benefits of Element No. 9
Oct. 26, 2006 — The Utah Science Center’s Science in Society free public dialogue series will present “Fluorine: Fluoridation, Teflon and You,” Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the auditorium of the main downtown Salt Lake City Public Library, 210 East 400 South.
Local experts and the public will cover topics ranging from water fluoridation and dental health, to fluorochemicals in our environment and how they are measured.
Featured guests include:
— David Grainger, professor and chairman, Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Utah. Topic: Fluorinated materials, bone and beyond.
— Anthony Tidwell, dentist. Topic: Dental health and fluorinated water.
— Kevin Brown, director, Division of Drinking Water, Utah State Department of Environmental Quality. Topic: Utah Water and Fluoride.
— Royal DeLegge, director of environmental health, Salt Lake Valley Health Department. Topic: Community water fluoridation in Salt Lake County.
— Shazelle Terry, manager of water treatment, Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. Topic: Fluoridating water.
— Edward Heithmar, research chemist, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Las Vegas, Nev. Topic: Measuring Fluoro-chemicals.
— Joe Andrade, director of the Utah Science Center and distinguished professor of bioengineering, University of Utah. Topic: Element 9, its properties and applications.
The “Science in Society” public dialogue series is sponsored bi-monthly by the Utah Science Center (www.utahsciencecenter.org). Science in Society brings timely and sometimes controversial topics to the public in an understandable and informative manner. The dialogues are presented in an interactive, non-lecture style with public dialogue as the major objective. Science in Society is co-sponsored by The Salt Lake City Public Library, KCPW Radio and The Leonardo. All Science in Society events are broadcast on KCPW.
