April 24, 2007–The Hinckley Institute of Politics and S.J. Quinney College of Law announce that Ralph Nader will speak Friday, April 27 at 11:30 a.m. in the Hinckley Caucus Room located in Orson Spencer Hall room 255 on the University of Utah campus. Nader’s speech, “Building Democracy: Challenging Corporate Power,” is free and open to the public.

Nader has devoted his life to consumer advocacy. He worked with lawmakers to create the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety commission. Consumer protection laws Nader helped draft and pass include the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Meat and Poultry Inspection Rules, the Air and Water Pollution Control Laws and the Freedom of Information Act.

In 1996, Nader organized the Green Party’s first presidential campaign, receiving 700,000 votes on a campaign budget of $5,000. He ran again in 2000 and received 2.8 million votes. Nader’s goal is to build the foundation of a third political party and progressive political movement that rallies “around issues rather than empty slogans and figureheads.”
