April 27, 2007 — The University of Utah’s Center for Disability Services is happy to announce the first ever Sorenson Legacy Foundation Scholarship for Disabled students currently enrolled at the University of Utah. The scholarship is funded by the Sorenson Legacy Foundation.
The Center for Disability Services (CDS) has been a member of the Division of Student Affairs for over 25 years and provides accommodations and support for the educational development of students with disabilities. Typically that support comes through providing interpreters, note takers and advisors who assist students with negotiating the university system in order to meet their academic needs.
As an organization, the CDS is the designated campus agency to assist students with disabilities, improve understanding and acceptance of students with disabilities throughout the University community and initiate educational efforts to create a supportive psychological environment so students can achieve educational objectives.
The first Sorenson Legacy Foundation Scholarships will be awarded for students attending the U next fall, 2007.
According to Director Joe Pete Wilson, the scholarships are especially needed because students with a disability face so many additional costs when attending college. Transportation costs, using adaptive technology, extra tutoring, and the additional time demands all add up to more costs for the student with a disability and also translate to less time available to work and earn for college. The grants going to students will allow them to spend more time on their academic work and less time worrying about funds.
The Sorenson Legacy Foundation is a non-profit corporation established by the James LeVoy Sorenson family for the exclusive purpose of promoting charitable, religious, educational, literary and scientific endeavors. The Center for Disability Services is very excited and thankful to have been chosen to represent the foundation with this goal.
