November 12, 2007 – Students from Utah’s colleges and universities will hold a press conference this Wednesday, Nov. 14 at noon. on Capitol Hill to demonstrate their support for a proposed state sales tax exemption on college textbooks. The press conference will focus on the importance of this proposition as it relates to individual college students and the state of Utah as a whole.

Similar  tax-free textbook initiatives have already been successfully enacted in 17 other states across the country.  Student leaders throughout Utah have combined efforts to help curb the increasing cost of higher education.  On average, each college student in Utah spends over $900 each year on textbooks. Allowing students to purchase their textbooks without the additional cost of sales tax would save each student hundreds of dollars over the course of their college education. This proposal is estimated to save Utah students a total of more than $4.5 million annually and is a significant step toward a more affordable education.
