Feb. 6, 2013 — The Salt Lake City Mayor’s Office and the College of Architecture + Planning at the University of Utah are again bringing together a host of interested people to uncover new ways of using city treasures that have been “hidden in plain sight.”
The theme for this year’s symposium is “Completing the Circle: The University & Surrounding Neighborhoods.” The program is open to the public and will be held on Feb. 14, 2013 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the West Institute, 170 South University Street, across from Pioneer Theater. Refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m. The first two symposia covered the Jordan Riverscape and the downtown industrial area known as the Granary District.
Presidents Circle is at the heart of the University of Utah, but the u-shaped gateway to campus ends abruptly where the university meets the adjacent University Gardens business district.
“This incomplete circle speaks volumes, conveying a strong message that the boundary between the U and the neighborhood is hard and fast,” says Nan Ellin, professor and chair of the U’s City and Metropolitan Planning Department. “Metaphorically, completing the circle opens the way for a more vibrant flow from campus to business district and from the community to the many valuable attractions on campus.”
The Mayor’s Symposium will gather experts from the neighborhood, Salt Lake City and academia to share their ideas for enhancing connections between the U and surrounding neighborhoods. Speakers include Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, Aristo’s restaurateur Aristo Boutsikakis, Esther Hunter and Ray Whitchurch with the East Central Community Council, SLC Workshop students and Fern Tiger, University of Washington professor of urban studies. A complete schedule and list of speakers is available online at http://tiny.utah.edu/8168.
