What:  Forty-eight robots created by almost 2,000 teenage engineers from nine western

U.S. states and Alberta, Canada, will compete at FIRST, the For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and Technology regional robotics competition.

Cosponsored by the College of Engineering, the competition cultivates innovators
and engineers from 22 Utah high schools and 26 others from as far as Honolulu.

This year’s competition, “Aerial Assist,” is a volleyball-meets-soccer event. Two
robot alliances of three teams each vie to outscore each other during a two-and-a-half
minute bout. Winners qualify for the national championship April 23–26 in St.

When: Thursday, March 13 – Setup day for robot inspections and practice rounds.
Friday, March 14 – 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Qualification matches.
Saturday, March 15 – 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Qualification matches and final rounds.
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Awards ceremony.
