November 5, 2014 – Two University of Utah student athletes will be honored at Saturday’s football game for their commitment to civic engagement, volunteerism and the impact of their service. The Lowell Bennion Community Center will award Ashton Hall and Rebekah Winterton with the 2014 Utah Athletes in Service Award, which highlights role models of community engagement.

“These students deserve special recognition for taking time from their busy academic and athletic schedules to engage in projects that make a difference in Salt Lake City,” said Dean McGovern, executive director of the Bennion Center.

Hall, a soccer player majoring in psychology and chemistry has provided more than 200 hours of service with community partners including Hser Ner Moo, Operation Christmas Child and St. Mark’s Hospital. Hall hopes that through her example other students realize the difference they can make when they make time to help others in need. She plans to attend medical school after graduation.

Winterton, a cross country and track and field athlete who is working toward a master’s degree in accounting has volunteered more than 150 hours with 15 community organizations including Lunch for the Lunchless, Lincoln Elementary School and the Millcreek Rest Home. Winterton describes community service as a lifelong habit she and her family enjoy together.

The awards will be presented by Senior Vice President Ruth Watkins, trustee Phil Clinger, Athletic Director Chris Hill and community advocate Pamela Atkinson at the football game against University of Oregon, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.
