U of U Chicano Scholarship Applications Due January 15th

December 31, 2003 — This year the University of Utah will present at least ten Chicano Scholarship Awards of $1,000 each to new freshman, transfer and current University undergraduate and graduate students. Scholarships of lesser value will be awarded as well. The ten scholarships are awarded to high school seniors and other college students who promote the cultural pride and advancement of the Chicano/Latino community. Recipients are selected on the basis of family background, life challenges, scholastic effort, involvement in the Chicano/Latino community and financial need.

Those interested in applying for the Chicano Scholarship Awards, which are funded through private contributions, must have resided in Utah for a minimum of five years and may apply before being accepted to the University. Part-time students are eligible, but awards to these students will be pro-rated.

Margie Victoria Delgado, coordinator for the Chicano Scholarship Fund, notes past scholarship recipients were active in their communities and have gone onto successful careers in, among other professions, teaching, social work, medicine and law.
