September 19, 2006 — The University of Utah, in partnership with UTA, is promoting World Car Free Day on September 22, 2006 when millions of people around the world are expected to go car free. On this specific day, University staff, faculty, and students are encouraged to use alternative transportation to get to campus.

As an added incentive to participate, the department of Commuter Services will operate a booth at RedFest to distribute UTA Ed passes that allow students, faculty, and staff to ride the bus and TRAX for free. The department will also offer free tune-ups for all bike commuters and the University of Utah Cycling Club will be present to answer questions about the sport of cycling. Just bring your bicycle by and an employee of Bingham Cyclery will be on hand to give your ride a maintenance check-up. The booth will be in operation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each year, World Car Free Day is celebrated by over 100 million people in 1,500 cities around the world. It is a vital tool in the larger day to day, year to year process of reducing car dependence in cities.

World Car Free Day is part of a month long “Curb Your Car” campaign that runs during the month of September.
